This very old spittoon was used in the American railroads as a tobacco spitting recipient. It is a large one, completely hand made with coppersmith hammertone and seams braised in brass. There are two of these seams, see pictures. One is along the top portion of the body, the other around the bottom. The bottom of this spittoon is fairly dented from usage. This is not apparent when the spittoon is in upright position.
